Hey Web Heads! As most of you know, Marvel blessed us with the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer a couple weeks ago. If you haven’t gotten the chance to see it, you can watch it here:
This trailer is a treasure trove stuffed with exciting Peter Parker character development, and potential plot twists looming around every corner.
Everyone knows the trope of someone going abroad and coming back a totally new person (enlightened if you will) by spending a couple months in a romantic European country, eating only at authentic local restaurants, and visiting the highest brow museums, even if only for the Gram. This experience seems to be universal whether you go to France, England, or — like our Peter — Italy.
Spider-Man: Homecoming captured our hearts, convinced us Tom Holland is a worthy Spider-Man, and kicked off what promises to be an amazing trilogy. Although it holds a place in my heart, it’s all about Peter Parker finding his groove as Spider-Man and setting the tone for his movies. It’s only a start.
Post Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man fans have been touched by the idea that Spider-Man isn’t just a Peter Parker. He’s not just a nerdy, pasty, witty boy shooting webs and shooting pics for The Daily Bugle. There is a Spider-Man in all of us. This begs the question, what makes Tom Holland’s Spider-Man a Spider-Man?
Uncle Ben
One of the binding forces in Into the Spider-Verse was that they all had an “Uncle Ben” figure: Someone whose death leaves the hero with a sense of guilt, and a deeper understanding of their role as a superhero.
This trailer gives a slight nod to Uncle Ben. As Peter packs for his trip abroad there’s a shot of him closing his luggage, with the letters BFP engraved on it. Benjamin Franklin Parker.

As much as it would be nice to know what happened to Ben Parker in this series I think exploring him might be the least interesting route for Marvel to take. In Spider-Man: Homecoming (2013) Uncle Ben is rarely, if ever mentioned. This seems odd for someone who has played such a huge role in Peter Parker’s life.
I think this movie should begin to develop Peter’s character with a new Uncle Ben. Tony Stark. It’s more than likely that Stark will pass away during Avengers: Endgame and Marvel will have to address how this loss affects Peter. Tony mentored Peter, (making him a role model and father figure) and as such, his death may be the one that helps Peter realize – as cliché as it is – with great power comes great responsibility.

PP and MJ Forever
The trailer also teases at Peter’s relationship with MJ blooming. This means we get to know MJ a bit more, which is exciting considering her sarcastic and distant quality in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Mostly I’m excited to see the Peter/MJ Dynamic brought to life again (eek!)
Friends and Family
We can also expect to see Peter Parker realize what being Spider-Man means for the people that are close to him. Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man dealt with similar issues of putting MJ in immediate danger.
In Homecoming, this concept could not be explored because the love interest was The Vulture’s daughter. Now with Ned getting taken out with darts and MJ getting closer he may have to man up and take responsibility for those he loves.
Fame
At the beginning of the trailer we see Parker in a press conference which means we’re going to see how Peter is adjusting to his fame and secret identity a la Hannah Montana.
Basically,
Tom Holland won us over in Spider-Man: Homecoming and this next movie only promises to bring us some more Spidey goodness and some strong character development as Peter goes through hardships, finds love, and learns what it truly means for him to be Spider-Man.
Oh, the things you learn when you go abroad!
