Hey Webheads! My name is Rachael. I started this blog because ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved Spider-Man. As cliché as it sounds he was my hero. He is my dad’s favourite superhero and he passed down his love for Spider-Man on to me. I’ve seen three different film iterations of my favourite story and I’m so excited to watch the baton being passed on to Miles Morales.
Spider-Man is my favourite character and not only because he has a cute butt in a tight suit. He’s relatable. I know tons of Spider-Man fans say this and that’s because it’s true. Spider-Man represents all of us. The people who are clumsy, who miss the school bus, who mess up. Just because we screw up sometimes doesn’t mean that we’re not special or that we can’t be the heroes of our own stories. It means that we have to own up to our own right and responsibility to wear the mask.
Spider-Man helps us see that we all have shortcomings, but we also have great power and it’s our responsibility just as much as it is his to use it for good.
When I was a little girl I remember playing at my Aunt Honey’s house. They owned two Spider-Man suits, one for my cousin Raphu, and one for my cousin Mikey. One day Raphu strutted into the living room decked out head to toe in red with the second suit in his hand. I grabbed it from him and fought over the suit with Mikey until our parents had to intervene. I got to wear the suit and boy did I feel like a princess.
I believe that Spider-Man is a timeless role model and that he shouldn’t just be for boys, or geeks, or nice guys in fedoras. Spider-Man is for me and you and there should be no barrier to entry if a new person wants to join the club. That’s why I created this blog. So that new fans wouldn’t feel intimidated by entering an established fan base.
I know that with the new Tom Holland films and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse there are tons of new fans coming from all the Spider-Man buzz in pop culture. To you I’d like to say hello and welcome to our friendly neighbourhood!
